What’s it like? Anastasios Grigoriadis, a trainee on our graduate scheme last year, talks about his experiences
Route to our chemistry graduate scheme
I joined the Robert Hopkins’ graduate scheme with text-book chemistry knowledge but no hands-on experience of its impact in real life.
While finishing my chemistry master’s degree I was getting by as a kitchen worker in a Cardiff nursing home. I was curious when I came across waste management as a career pathway. I went for an interview at Robert Hopkins and haven’t looked back!

Graduate training experience
The programme immerses you in three areas: laboratory services and the commercial and technical aspects of waste operations.
English is my second language so starting in the lab was reassuring, as the scientific language felt familiar. At first I didn’t really understand where the waste was coming from or going to. I gained full insight of the waste journey with the technical team. Working on the commercial side completed the picture. I really enjoyed the interaction with our customers.
Along the way, there’s huge support from colleagues: from showing the precision of the lab techniques step-by-step to explaining the safety protocols of the fast-paced activity on site. I was encouraged to give feedback at every step to shape my learning and that of future graduates.
Real world impact of a site chemist
At the end of the scheme, I was very happy to accept the position of a site chemist. It’s working outdoors which I like, checking the labelling, segregation and movement of hazardous waste. It’s about compliance yet goes beyond that by supporting customers’ environmental improvement goals. My goal is to gain further experience to become a senior chemist here.
Why Robert Hopkins?
As well as the scheme’s quality, there’s a personal touch. Everyone knows you by name. There’s understanding too. I’m from Greece originally and soon after I started here I had to go back at short notice for a week to sort out military service paperwork. It wasn’t an issue at all for my managers.
